Quick Guide to Traditional MissalsReturn to top of Home Page
There are currently, in print, six different Latin-English Missals for the Traditional (Tridentine) Rite of Mass, and Southwell Books supplies them all. However, choosing the best one for you, or as a present for someone, can be a bewildering task - each one offers a different list of extra features, quality of printing and binding, and, of course, price. Therefore, to help you, at least, narrow down your choice, we have produced an "at-a-glance" comparative guide below of some of the more important features of a missal. At the top of the table we've listed content criteria; at the bottom criteria relating to physical appearance and manufacture. We'll be adding to the list in accordance with the feedback and questions we receive from customers.

If you simply want a missal for use on Sundays and Holydays with the Ordinary and Proper, all our missals will do good service. If you have extra requirements (such as liturgical music notation, for example) then some will be more suitable than others. We suggest you also read the fuller description for each missal (click on the title of each one). You are also encouraged to phone us (or email us) and we will be very happy to try to answer any questions you still have before making your choice.

Bonded leather is a trade term for a method of book covering that provides a cheaper alternative to real leather, while retaining the leather feel. A coating made from leather off-cuts is applied to hardback boards and then embossed to give the look of real leather.

Are you experiencing problems paying online?

The vast majority of our customers have a trouble-free time when paying online on our website, but once in a while a technical problem crops up. We're compiling a list of common ones and posting them here. Please keep us informed so we know about them.

Problem:
"I've filled in my name and address and reached the Order Summary page in the checkout, clicked on the grey HSBC pay by a credit or debit card online button, but the system won't let me proceed any further."

The secure online payments system we use is run for us by the HSBC Bank. We've spoken to HSBC about this problem and there are two possible reasons:

Reason No.1: HSBC tell us that they can absolutely guarantee that their system will work only if a customer uses Internet Explorer or Netscape as his/her browser. If you are using another browser, such as Mozilla or Opera, etc., it might work, but can't be guaranteed. We found this out only recently and are not pleased, to put it mildly. Many other online shops using HSBC's system are also very unpleased and have told HSBC so (as have we). They say they're working on it. Hmm.

Short-term solution: phone us (01235 521224) with your order and we'll take your payment details that way. We're very friendly and won't bite. Promise.

Reason No.2: HSBC tell us that your Cache might be full or clogged up and you need to delete your Temporary Internet Files. In Internet Explorer click on Tools then Internet Options then choose the General tab. In the middle section headed Temporary Internet Files click Delete Files.

If you don't want to do this, call us (01235 521224) and we'll take your order and payment details over the phone. At least you can have a chat (and a moan)...if you want to.

If you have any other technical problems, please phone us (01235 521224). You can always give us your order that way and, importantly, we want to hear about technical problems, so we can do something about them. Between the hours of 10am and 6pm (Mon-Fri) you'll find a human being at the other end - no call centres, no irritating "menus", just Mike or Mary. Outside office hours you'll get our answerphone - and we do phone back if you leave a number.
