Mike Lord
Mike Lord read Modern History at Oxford University and gained a post-graduate diploma in Law from the College of Law in York. He taught English privately for a number of years in London, Oxford and abroad, and helped manage a business training company in London before moving to Somerset following his marriage to Mary six years ago. Currently living in Abingdon near Oxford, he maintains an interest in the impact of the Catholic Faith, past and present, on culture and the arts.

"When I’m not selling books, I enjoy performing in amateur theatre (a habit I picked up as a student) and brewing my own beer. My family and friends derive great pleasure from both activities. I met Mary on a Catholic singles website and we are delighted that our marriage has been blessed with two wonderful little sons."

Welcome to one of the newest Catholic booksellers in the U.K. Founded by husband and wife team Mike and Mary Lord, Southwell Books aims to satisfy the growing demand for books that reflect the riches of the Catholic Faith.

All the titles we supply are in line with the Church's timeless, orthodox teachings on faith, doctrine, morals and the liturgy.

In our catalogue you will find classics of Catholic writing and catechism, alongside recently published books dealing with contemporary problems, from medical ethics to the debate about the liturgy. We also include a range of Catholic fiction to prove, if it were necessary, that there are many ways to inspire us to live full and fulfilling Catholic lives. Indeed, we have taken as our patron the English Jesuit martyr St. Robert Southwell, best known in the secular world as an accomplished poet.

 Mary Lord
Mary Lord graduated in Philosophy from the University of London. She subsequently gained a Diploma in Mathematics from the Open University and completed a Degree in Mathematical Science, also with the Open University. She has taught Maths at a private school and educated her own children for a while. She has also worked in the Special Needs Department of a large comprehensive school in Somerset. She has an ongoing interest in, and concern about, the current state of education.

"I have three children from my first marriage (now at university), and much of my life has been devoted to bringing them up (mainly on my own, as I was widowed when they were very young). Now we have little James and David, I’ve got to start all over again! I enjoy organic gardening (Mike appreciates the fruit and veg) and singing in Early Music choirs when I get the chance."
