 | Aelred of Rievaulx, St. (1109-1166) Born at Hexham in Northumberland, Aelred became a Cistercian monk, eventually being elected Abbot of Rievaulx in Yorkshire. He was a friend of King David of Scotland and had considerable influence on Henry II of England early in his reign. In his later years, Aelred suffered many infirmities and was a model of heroic patience. Amongst his writings he is particularly know for his sermons and ascetical treatises, and his treatise on spiritual friendship. |
|  | Agreda, Ven. Mary of (1602-1665) Born in Agreda, Spain. Christened Maria Fernandez Coronel, she took the blue habit and made her vows as a nun in the Franciscan order, and in 1627 she became abbess of the Agreda Franciscan monastery until her death. The process to declare her a saint began almost immediately after her death, in 1672, as she had lived a life of evident holiness in the eyes of her contemporaries. During her life, she had experienced mystical phenomena including private revelations. |

|  | Allers, Dr. Rudolf (1883-1963) Born in Vienna into a medical and scientific family, Allers became one of the great Catholic thinkers of the 20th century in his chosen fields of psychiatry, philosophy and patrology. Moved to America in 1937 when life under the Nazis became increasingly difficult. Wrote one of the most solid refutations of Freud (under whom he had studied), called The Successful Error. Awarded the St. Thomas Aquinas Medal in the USA for his teaching and writings. |

He was a Liberal MP (1906-1910), but became disillusioned with party politics. Great friend and collaborator with G.K. Chesterton (G.B. Shaw termed the name "the Chesterbelloc" to describe this two-headed beast!). Redoubtable apologist and polemicist for Catholicism. |
