Mauriac, François (1885-1970) A French Catholic author of novels, plays, essays and political commentary who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1952. His novels include Therese Desqueyroux, Vipers' Tangle and The Woman of the Pharisees. He explored, inter alia, the themes of sin, obsession and repression and their effect on individuals, and the grace that is available to even the most hardened sinner.
