The Shadow of the Bear
Regina Doman
A novel for Catholic teenagers set in contemporary New York.
Sisters Rose and Blanche enter an uneasy friendship with a mysterious youth they know as ‘Bear’. He looks pretty disreputable, but he quotes G.K. Chesterton and they seem to have more in common with him than the cynical, worldly pupils at their nominally Catholic school. Is Bear a criminal and a drug dealer, or is he a hero in disguise? Why does he have the key to a deserted Gothic church and what links him to the holy priest who was murdered in front of its altar?
As the sisters battle with the temptations and difficulties of modern high school life, they find themselves drawn into an increasingly frightening world of crime and corruption.
Written from a very sound Catholic perspective, this has all the elements that young people look for in a novel: school politics, mystery, suspense and a touch of romance. Regina Doman has added themes of spirituality, prayer, virtue, sacrifice and martyrdom that run through the text. Extremely well received by the target readership and a very refreshing change from most books written for this age group today.
